With the introduction of the updated national curriculum in 2014 we have made some huge changes to the way we teach ‘Design and Technology’. We have introduced ‘cooking’ into the curriculum. Cooking starts in early years and we have a progressive curriculum where the children are supported to be confident in the kitchen. This has involved us making some big changes so that we can create a space for a class of 30 to ‘cook’. We now have a fantastic kitchen downstairs in the basement. All our Key Stage Two children have a term of 'cooking sessions' and some are even cooking for their parents and carers at home.
Our children have learnt to prepare and cook:
- Sandwiches with different flavours, seasoning and fillings
- Garlic Bread
- Homemade Pizza
- Frittata
- Couscous salad
- Biscuits
- Mince Pies
- Spaghetti Bolognese
- Curry
- Scones
- Cakes and buns
As well as cooking the children also learn about a range of different famous cooks who specialise in different areas within their field. We know this is a subject the children love and they enjoy watching programmes such as the bake off - we even have our own bake off competitions in school. We really are producing a generation of cooks and bakers which is just lovely to see. Please see our year group Twitter pages for pictures of the classes in action in the kitchen!
